My proposal to the selection panel was to make a very contemporary looking 10 or 12-year old girl at play, pretending to fly. She was to convey the joy and utter concentration that sometimes embodies children's play – how lost in the moment they are and engrossed. I also wanted her to symbolise how education is an entry into the world, a way to take off and get a good start.
